There was also reading lots of newspapers, reading other books like Queer London, Matt Houlbrook’s book which [covers] mainly 1918 to 1957, the era just before the one I write about. And also just keeping my ear open for other things – it was a process of active engagement. So learning from history, or rather ‘herstory’, helps immensely. Change can happen and nothing is absolute. Author Dan Glass on the inspiration behind Queer Footprints, a guide to London’s fierce LGBTQ+ history Author, activist and presenter Dan Glass talked to GCN about his new book Queer Footprints: A Guide to Uncovering London’s Fierce History. Angela Davis talks about optimism as a radical act: “You have to act as if it were possible to radically transform the world. And you have to do it all the time.” Also, Paulo Freire’s book Pedagogy of Hope says that we continually have to sculpt hope in our lives and our movements. Not in a false way of “let’s all link arms and give peace a chance.” No: we have to look at the structures in society and build structurally in response. That’s one thing which helped me strike [the balance]: movements which are hopeful, and which have created active change.

Dan Glass is a living gift from our queer ancestry with an ability to write our present with an alternative view of our past. His experience has shaped the way we appreciate the world we live in and how we choose to question the past' United Queerdom: From the Legends of the Gay Liberation Front to the Queers of Tomorrow is a toolkit of case studies, strategies, philosophies, methodologies and tactics for LGBTQIA+ liberation. But it doesn’t stop there. In the spirit of the original aims of the Gay Liberation Front (GLF), who started the modern Pride movement, it exists in the spirit of `Absolute Freedom for All’ and lives by the mantra of ‘All Injustices Are Connected.’

NOTCHES: Whose stories or what topics were left out of your book and why? What would you include had you been able to? Share this event Save this event: Walking Tour - Diverse London - A walk on the wild side through queer Soho Meet Author and Campaigner, Dan Glass and RCA graduate and illustrator, Mark Glasgow. They will take you on a journey in a ground-breaking new guidebook to London, Queer Footprints. Glass: Ooooh controversial one. I left out a lot of movement tactics that relate to ‘identity politics.’ Not the kind of identity politics that results in positive affirmation of marginalised communities, but the kind of identity politics that result in a reductive ‘oppression olympics’, a race-to-the-bottom understanding of change-making whereby everyone ends up at a dead-end road. During this global COVID pandemic, we like many other organisations have been impacted greatly in the way we can do business and produce. This means a temporary pause to our print publication and live events and so now more than ever we need your help to continue providing this community resource digitally. Glass has used his vast experience as a campaigner to create something dizzyingly energetic. His writing isn't just informative; it compels you to act.’

Dan's enthusiasm and passion for LGBTQIA+ culture is relentless. It is impossible to read this book without being swept up into the legend of London's Queer history of resistance, solidarity and downright fabulosity. By the end of this book you will be marching on the streets in a thong' Offers a fascinating, lively and revealing look into the capital's queer past. Like the winding streets themselves, there is something surprising at every turn. This is a queer look at London with a Capital Q and is by turns intimate, gossipy, personal and political. Glass represents a vital link between the important activists who helped shape the world we live in and those who would shape the future and is a charming, knowledgeable and amenable tour guide.’ Opportunities to explore a curated selection of items from the LSE Library's Hall-Carpenter Archive An illuminating and inspiring journey around the city of London; weaving together stories of resistance, care and the joy of collective trouble-making, and reminding us of the connectedness of our lives and struggles. In Queer Footprints , radical queer history is something that is constantly being made, not consigned to the past. This is a book that evokes many feelings – but above all, it provides us with the hope we need to act ' QUEERCIRCLE IS A NEW LGBTQ+ LED CHARITY WORKING AT THE INTERSECTION OF ARTS, CULTURE AND SOCIAL ACTION. Having opened our new home in June 2022, QUEERCIRCLE seeks to develop an ecology of artists, curators, writers, thinkers, community organisers, grassroots organisations and charities who collectively work together to reimagine the role cultural spaces play in society.

One of my favourite case studies is Carla Toney in the Trafalgar Square chapter. Carla was the first woman and lesbian to make a speech at the first Gay Liberation Front demo in 1971, the year before the first Pride. Her story has never been written down in a book. History is often told by those who have the luxury to write it. And if you are in London or you plan to visit, take it into the streets, on your own or with friends, with strangers, whatever works for you. A fascinating walk through the early years of Gay Liberation to the (partial) decriminalisation of Homosexuality in June 1967'
